Movement for equality within the criminal justice system (POST4)

My blog has focused on the inequalities within the criminal justice system. I wanted to examine how class plays a role in these inequalities. Specifically, whether people in the lower class suffer more from the criminal justice system. Some of the inequalities that I have mentioned are:  criminal justice system targets poor and non-white populations disadvantaged populations are given harsher sentences people who are black and high school dropouts have high incarceration rate the cash bail system favors the wealthy (https://www.injusticewatch.org/news/2020/pretrial-fairness-act-bill-end-cash-bail-illinois/) End Money Bail Act There are many inequalities that we can see in this system and there needs to be more awareness about them. One thing that I suggest needs to be changed is the cash bail system. From my research, I found the "End Money Bail Act". This is a policy to knock down the current cash bail system and make it more fair. This bill will let the state and local gove...

DuBois Theory and Inequalities within Criminal Justice System (POST3)

Inequalities Within The Criminal Justice System My topic is on inequalities within the criminal justice system. Specifically, how class plays a role in these inequalities. There has been research shown that the criminal justice system targets poor and non-white populations. These disadvantaged populations are given harsher sentences. There is also a correlation between education level and prison; those who are black and high school dropouts have the highest incarceration rate. My recent blog had mentioned the cash bail system, which favors the wealthy since they are the people who can actually afford the bail. This blog will discuss a well-known classical sociological theorist, W.E.B. DuBois, and how his theory can explain the inequalities found in the justice system. W.E.B. DuBois Dubois focused on the relationships between race, class, capitalism, and colonialism. He thought that the struggles of races were caused by growing inequalities in wealth, the rise of imperialism, and ...

Social class inequalities within the criminal justice system (POST2)

There are a plethora of inequalities in the criminal justice system. One major inequality that this blog will focus on is inequalities based on different social classes, specifically upper and lower class. There has been much research that has shown that the justice system favors certain populations. Knowledge that the criminal justice system targets poor and non-white populations helps you understand that certain population groups are more likely to be incarcerated. It is hard to have a fair trial when you are already being targeted. ( https://online.campbellsville.edu/criminal-justice/social-stratification-inequality-and-the-u-s-criminal-justice-system/ ).  This website also includes some interesting findings: "Disadvantaged populations are usually given harsher sentences than those from dominant populations for the same crimes”. T hese same disadvantaged populations don’t have the resources needed to eradicate that disadvantage. The result of this is people becoming ...

Criminal Justice System (POST1)

Forbes, 2019. What Can the Average Person Do To Improve the Criminal Justice System? For my blog, I wanted to focus on inequalities in the criminal justice system. Specifically, how these inequalities relate to different social classes. Some of the things that this blog will mention are cases where people of different social classes received different punishments for the same crime and rules of the criminal justice system that benefit one social class over the other. I will also discuss how wealth affects the justice system. There are some "rules" that seem to benefit wealthy people compared to those who are not so wealthy. The purpose of this blog is to aware people on how the criminal justice system treats people differently based on their social class. I chose this topic because it is something everyone should have knowledge on. The criminal justice system could affect anyone and it's important to realize how biased this system is. You probably heard many times that th...
